On 9 October 2020, a staff member of the Department of Guided Tours Organization of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Salimova G. I. held a knowledge event on “The history of letters and mail” for the military personnel from the military unit of Syzran. The event was devoted to the World Day of Mail.
Mail as a way of transferring correspondence, parcels and other things has existed since time immemorial.
In a small German town called Eutin, there is an oak, which has its own mailing address. The thing is, in XIX century two are an item exchanged letters with each other putting them in a hollow tree. Since then many single people put their letters into this oak trying to find a soul mate.
Even in the era of progress and Internet technologies, it is hard to imagine our life without work of mail. Besides, in many remote locations the postal worker serves as a bridge connecting these areas with “the big land”. Mailmen work very hard but sometimes they have a rest – on 9 October every year when the entire planet celebrates the World Day of Mail.
People’s lives, the development of economy and business and even the historical course of events depend on timely delivered information. There are legends and stories about the people who rushes to bring a message despite the weather, state of health and mood. Their feat will remain in heroic stories forever. That is why on 9 October every year, these workers receive congratulations deservedly.
The celebration takes place in the framework of the traditional Week of letters. By that date, in many countries new stamps are issued. There are events, conferences, contests and exhibitions devoted to the postal service. Postal workers showing special distinction in their work receive awards.
During the event, the guests became acquainted with the history of letters and wrote letters themselves. These messages are sent by mail to their relatives and friends. It is significantly that our guests-servicemen wrote letters on the day of mail because during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, when postal service played a major role in supporting the spirit of people, soldiers also sent letters to their families. This event is like a reminder of people who went to war and of those who waited for the news from their loved ones.
