On 26 September 2020, a staff member of the department “Museum Street” of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Sagirova G. Y. held a museum video class “Spassky uyezd and famous people” in the museum “The town on the river”.
Our memory holds many interesting and informative things. Still the residents of Bolgar sometimes call their town Spassk, just for old times’ sake. Although these towns are completely different but they have the common history. The first town named Bolgar in 1991 in honor of the ancient capital of Volga Bulgaria now is the district center located on the bank of the Volga River. The second – old uyezd town Spassk founded by Catherine II and renamed in 1935 as Kuybyshev in honor of Soviet politician for half a century is resting on the bed of the river beneath a thick layer of water…
In 1781, Kazan Governorate was established by decree of Catherine II, and Spassk became the uyezd town. Many famous scientists and writers are connected with the town of Spassk and the uyezd with the same name. In 1761, an 18-year-old student Gavrila Derzhavin led a scientific archaeological expedition to the village Uspenskoye (now the village Bolgary) located on the place of ancient Great Bolgar. In the early XIX century, Russian scientist-mathematician Nikolai Lobachevsky passed through Spassky uyezd and stayed in the village Bezdna. The names of chemistry academicians Alexander Butlerov and Alexander Arbuzov are also connected with Spassky uyezd. In 1833, Alexander Pushkin visited Spassk. He was gathering material about Pugachev’s rebellion. In 1846, Nikolai Nekrasov – a singer of the Russian peasantry – visited Spassk and even hunted in the central square of the town.
In the museum “The town on the river”, the audience knew about the emergence of the uyezd town Spassk, heard about the complex and tragic history on the banks of the river and became acquainted with the names of famous people who visited Spassky uyezd.
