On 25 August 2020, a staff member of the museum and educational department of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Sabirova L. A. in cooperation with specialists of Autonomous State Social Service Institution “Integrated Social Services Centre “Sunrise”” held an interactive event on “Medieval board games” for minor children from among the recipients of social services.
Volga Bulgars paid much attention to child rearing, and board games often were a part of this process. They developed logical thinking, attention and figurative thinking.
At the event, children became familiar with the history of one of the most popular games among Volga Bulgars – “Alquerque”. Alquerque is a “grandfather” of modern draughts. After 2000 years, the game called “kirkat” was mentioned in the research of an Arab who died in 976. When Moors invaded Spain, they brought with themselves al-kirkat. In Alquerque, the main features of draughts are clearly visible: it is a battle of equal units of 12 chips each where taking is carried out by a jump. Not without reason this beautiful game with simple rules spread throughout Africa and Asia.
During the event, the kids got acquainted with the history and rules of this medieval game and played it with pleasure.
