On 18 August 2020, a staff member of the Department of Guided Tours Organization of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Salimova G. I. held an event entitled “Early burial sites of Tankeyevka”.
Tankeyevka burial ground (IX-X centuries) is a complex of pagan graves left by one of the ethnic groups of population of early Volga-Kama Bulgaria in the period of its formation. The monument is one of the largest in Eastern Europe and crucial in highlighting important issues of the history of early Volga Bulgaria, such as the time of emergence of a new political entity in the Mid-Volga Region; formation of common Bolgar culture as the result of the conjunction of different cultural components; the nature and time of appearance of Muslim ritualism etc. The burial ground is located 1 km southeast of the village Tankeyevka. Now it is around the neighborhood of the village Tankeyevka of Spassky district of RT on the border with Ulyanovsk oblast, not far from the mouth of the river Yasachka (the Kuibyshev Reservoir), 22 km to the north of Bolgar.
At the event, the audience became familiar with the history of early Volga Bulgaria, knew many interesting things about pagan culture of ancient Bulgars who still followed ancient steppe faith – one of the forms of Tengriism in IX and the beginning of X centuries. In the exposition of the museum, the visitors saw the items from the burial ground testifying to pagan funerary practices when weapon, working equipment and precious gifts accompanied people to the world of the dead.
