On 29 July 2020, a staff member of the Department of Guided Tours Organization of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Salimova G. I. held an event on “The history of khan Kubrat”.
Khan Kubrat founded Great Bulgaria located in VII century on the territory of modern Ukraine, Russia and the North Caucasus. The khan descended from an old family of Dulo. His name means “a real wolf”.
The exact dates of his life are unknown. He was born presumably in 605 and grew up in Constantinople. It is known that his uncle was Organa. After the death of Organa, Kubrat began to rule Bulgarians. Contemporaries characterized him as a vigorous and clever ruler and warrior. In 632, khan Kubrat united Bulgarian tribes. Fanahoria became the capital of the state. Great Bulgaria occupied the territory of Priazovsky and Black Sea steppes. The ruler fought for power among Turks. He succeeded in establishing a strong state. Great Bulgaria in strength took the second place among European states after Byzantium.
In May 1912, in Ukrainian village Malaya Pereshepina a treasure was found. It consisted of gold dishware, jewelry and coins. The treasure was put into storage in Hermitage, St. Petersburg. Verner, a professor from Munich, provided evidence that the found things belonged to khan Kubrat. The village where the treasure was found, is considered to be a burial place of the great ruler. In 2001, a monument was installed there.
At the event, the audience became acquainted with the history of khan Kubrat. He is considered one of the most worthwhile persons in Bulgarian history. He united separate tribes and gave a push for future Bulgarian statehood on the Danube and the Volga.
