On 14 July 2020, a staff member of the Department of Guided Tours Organization of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Sabirzyanova L. I. held an information and knowledge event on “Fortification of cities in Volga Bulgaria”.
Fortification is military science about artificial closures and barriers reinforcing the disposition of the troops during a battle. Therefore, they are called fortifications (from French “fortifier” – to strengthen, to reinforce).
Construction of fortifications on the territory of our land has very ancient traditions. The history of the development of fortification in the territory of the Middle Volga went in line with the development of warfare in Europe. Fortresses of Volga Bulgaria, and later – of the Golden Horde and Kazan khanate constituted the examples of advanced engineering and reliably protected the residents from enemy invasion.
During the event, tourists became acquainted with the notion of fortification and types of defensive fortifications. They knew how early Bulgars protected their towns and what defensive fortifications were used in towns of Volga Bulgaria during the pre-Mongolian period and in the Golden Horde era. The guests learned about traditions of stone building in this state and the interaction of fortification and a tactic of war.
