On 12 July 2020, a staff member of the Department of Guided Tours Organization of Bolgar Museum-Reserve V. N. Glavnova held a museum lesson on “Courage of the Guards Tank Army” devoted to the largest tank battle in the Great Patriotic War, which was between the Soviet and German armies near Prokhorovka in 1943.
To stop the advance of the enemy and defeat his forces, on 12 July N. F. Vatutin decided to launch a major strike against German positions. There was the largest counter fight in the whole World War II near Prokhorovka station. 1500 tanks and self-propelled guns from both sides participated in it simultaneously. During the day of the battle, belligerents lost from 30 to 60 per cent of tanks and self-propelled artillery. On 12 July 1943, the battle of Kursk was reversed. The enemy stopped the offensive and started to withdraw the forces to their original position. The tank battle near Prokhorovka finally buried Hitler’s operation «Citadel». The enemy failed to turn the tide of war in his favor. The Kursk defensive operation of soviet forces ended.
During the event, the guests became familiar with the history of the tank battle, knew about the heroes of that fight. The visitors watched a video entitled “The battle of Kursk. Belgorod direction”. The event ended with a minute of silence.
