On 10 July 2020, in the museum of “The town on the river”, a staff member of the Department of Guided Tours Organization of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Sokolikov A. held a thematic event on “The history of fishing of Volga Bulgaria”. A brief information about fishery in these parts since the founding of Bolgar was presented to the audience.
Fishing is a branch of human economic activity focusing on the fish catch. Originally, fishery was very primitive like other early forms of gathering nature’s gifts. At a certain period fish proved to be a major source of food for many tribes. In so doing, fishing was combined with hunting, primitive farming and gathering.
From ancient times, life of our land is closely linked to fish catch. Fishery was the main branch of economic activities of people, which inhabited Volga Bulgaria. Not coincidentally, most of the settlements was located on the banks of numerous water bodies. Unique monuments of ancient times – rock art (petroglyphs) – provide evidence of this.
During the event, the guests became familiar with the exposition of the museum and learned many interesting things about fishing as an economic sector of ancient Bulgars.
