On 3 June 2020, within the video tour cycle of the ancient town “An open-air museum” a research associate of the Department of Guided Tours Organization of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Hramova G.K. held a video tour of the Eastern mausoleum, which is a part of the central architectural ensemble of Bolgar town.
To the east of the Cathedral mosque, there is the Eastern mausoleum. Like other Bolgar monuments, it has a unique history. The Eastern mausoleum was a shrine of Bolgar nobles. It has a cubic foundation through bevels harmoniously going into an octagonal tier. The building is covered with tent. The door is on the south side. On three other sides, there are windows with a shape of pointed arches. The monument is nearly 700 years old. Bolgar architectural monuments are built of white and grey limestone and light Volga tuff. The interior view of the building and its dome are fully preserved. We see small holes on the dome – a tribute to traditions in architecture or yurt. The shrine has a peculiar structure of resonators for improving acoustics. If there are ceramic resonators in the Northern mausoleum, the Eastern mausoleum has special tubes nearly 60 cm long. The building was reconstructed and restored. In the early 18th century, it was rebuilt and used as a church.
In 1889-1990, the mausoleum was repaired. During the repair, workers found a gravestone dated 4 June 1291. The stone was placed on the grave of Sabar-Ilchi, a daughter of Prince Burash. It is stored in the Science library of Kazan State University. In 1967-1968, the mausoleum was partially restored to its original appearance. Last restoration work of the monument was in 2007. In 1992-1994, archaeological research was carried out inside the mausoleum. Then a half-moon was placed on the top of the monument. There is a unique exposition inside the building. It shows the stages of life of the town on the example of archaeological dig, since the 11th century to the present day.
