On 29 May 2020, a staff member of the Department of Guided Tours Organization of Bolgar Museum-Reserve V. N. Glavnova held a museum lesson on “The history of Slavic Writing” timed to the Day of Slavic Written Language and Culture.
On 24 May, all countries where Slavs live celebrate the Day of Slavic Writing and Culture. During the lesson, it was revealed that this day was devoted to the scientists and teachers who created Slavic writing. They are St. Cyril and Methodius famous in all Slavic countries. They were the founders of the Slavic Written Language. At the event, a presentation called “The history of creation of Slavic Writing” introduced the guests to the lives of saints Cyril and Methodius, the origin of Russian Writing, the story of creation of alphabet and the history of the Russian alphabet.
Now, thanks to the Day of Slavic Writing and Culture we can remember where our writing, books, libraries, schools and the literary richness of Russia come from. An ancient Russian chronicler exclaimed, “Learning can indeed be very useful!” While studying books and reading them, in the words of the same chronicler, we are reaping the fruit of beautiful sowing of ancient Russian educators who accepted the written language from the first teachers of Slavs – Cyril and Methodius. We should be eternally grateful to the creators of the Cyrillic alphabet the letters of which we put together to make syllables; from syllables, we produce words and put them into sentences, and, as a result, we write books.
