On 2 March 2020, a staff member of the Department of Guided Tours Organization of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Bitunova Y. A. held a lecture on “Traditions of celebrating Maslenitsa in Rus” for the students of the 1st grade of Bolgar sanatorium-type residential school.
Maslenitsa is one of the merriest holidays of the year, which is widely celebrated in Russia. It reflects the traditions of many centuries cherished and passed on from one generation to the next. The holiday lasts a week and includes a ceremony with songs, round dances and games devoted to farewell to winter and welcoming of spring. Since ancient times, it was a tradition to celebrate changing of the seasons in Rus. Our ancestors worshipped the Sun as the God because it gave birth to everything. That is why people were so glad about the spring’s coming and always celebrate this.
At the lecture, the children became acquainted with the history of emergence of the holiday and knew about the traditions of celebrating Maslenitsa. At the end of the lesson, the students actively played riddles.
