On 21 February 2020, a staff member of the Department of Guided Tours Organization of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Gaifutdinova O. A. held an event on “A young tour guide” devoted to International Tourist Guide Day for the students of the extended-day group of Bolgar Comprehensive School №1.
Tour guides is one of the most interesting professions that are in demand. Every day hundreds of thousands of these professional storytellers all over the world go with their groups to see historical monuments or treasures of culture. Tour guides have their own holiday celebrated on 21 February every year.
Historians consider that this profession appeared in Ancient Greece. When Greeks decided to hold Olympic Games people from all over the country went there. All of these guests wanted to know more about local sights.
It is interesting that until the middle of the last century, anyone could be a tour guide. For example, teachers of history worked part-time in museums, and local people who knew foreign languages became guides. It is only relatively recently that special schools, courses and touristic institutions began to train tour guides.
In 1985, the World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations appeared. It included representatives of 15 countries with the most developed tourism sector. The president of the federation offered to organize International Tourist Guide Day. The date was chosen in honor of the first meeting of the World Federation. In 1990, the holiday was celebrated for the first time.
A tour guide should know very well the history of a region where he gives a tour. A tourist can ask a trick question, and a guide must know the answer. Basic knowledge of human behavior can help in the future work with big groups of people – for example, to keep their attention for a long time or tell the facts, which are interesting to different age groups of tourists. A diction of a tour guide must be ideal. To be able to share his knowledge, to hear the words of gratitude from tourists for an interesting excursion is a real happiness for every tour guide.
At the event, the children became acquainted with the work responsibilities of a tour guide and learned what the difference is between a guide and a tour guide. The students played riddle games and actively asked questions about this profession.
