On 27 February 2020, a staff member of the museum and education department of Bolgar Museum-Reserve Sabirova L. A. held an interactive event on “Oh, Maslyona-the beauty!” for the students of the 5th-7th grades of Bolgar sanatorium-type residential school.
From ancient times, Maslenitsa is one of the most favorite holidays in the people. It has not the exact date, but people celebrate it at the end of February or at the beginning of March every year. They say farewell to winter and meet springtime. The main hero of the holiday is a pancake. It is a round, brown and hot symbol of the sun.
Maslenitsa was celebrated in villages and towns, in peasant huts and royal palaces. In the time of Peter I, amusement events on Maslenitsa took place in Moscow at Red Gates where Peter I himself opened the celebration on Monday swinging on a swing with officers. Maslenitsa was a merry festival. People said that if to celebrate this holiday with fun you would be happy next year.
At the event, the children became acquainted with the history and traditions of the holiday and knew that each day of Maslenitsa week has its own name. The kids actively took part in games and funny competitions, played riddles, sang songs and danced. The activity ended with a traditional festive tea party with pancakes.
