On this day in 1788 Russian troops under the command of Prince Grigory Alexandrovich Potemkin took the Turkish fortress Ochakov. The assault of the fortress was attended by about 50 thousand people under the leadership of the famous generals: Prince Suvorov, Prince Potemkin, count Rumyantsev, Prince N. In.
The capture of the Turkish fortress was not an easy task, about six months of Russian troops made unsuccessful attempts to capture it, eventually it was decided to act according to the plan of A. V. Suvorov to take Ochakov by storm. At 23-degree frost the Russian went on the attack, which lasted about an hour and a quarter, and the battle inside the fortress for about an hour. The Turks fiercely defended. Trophies were 310 guns and 180 banners. Data about the Turkish casualties were given different. In any case, about 4,000 Turks were captured. It means that about 16 thousand defenders of Ochakov were killed at storm. The news of Ochakov’s fall shocked Sultan Abdul-Hamid I so much that he died of a heart attack.
